On Dec. 14, there was an awards ceremony for the campus writing contest, which was hosted by the Writing Center. There were two parts to this writing contest; ‘A UOS (University of Seoul) program that helped me grow’ and ‘A class that left a great impression on UOS students’ contest. From Oct. 29 to Nov. 25, the Writing Center got entries through the Writing Center homepage. Two hundred thirty-eight students participated and 48 were awarded. The evaluations of the writings were done by guest professors of the Writing Center.

The contest was first started in 2012 as a part of the Advancement of College Education (ACE) project. What was special about this contest was that there was a system where the entry writings were edited. The purpose of this contest was to give students the chance to participate in a writing contest and to help students in improving their writing skills through the editing system.

In the case of ‘A UOS program that helped me grow’ contest, 54 students participated. These students were supposed to write about ACE programs that the UOS implemented in 2012. The programs that got the most writings were the Experience Learning Program (ELP), special programs for different majors, and English writing programs.

More students participated in ‘A class that left a great impression on UOS students’ contest. One hundred eighty-four students participated and 28 were given awards, including the award from the UOS president. One administrator said, “Through the contest, the UOS wanted to find good lectures and share desirable teaching methods with professors.

Moreover, the UOS believed that the contest could motivate students and provide them with a standard for good university lectures.” As for the students who got awards from the UOS president, Ha Ji-won (Dept. of International Relations, 08’) chose ‘Ethics’ class by Prof. Jeong Won-seob and Kim Yeon-ha (School of Economics, 11’) chose ‘Life and Literature in Korea’ class by Prof. Seo Myung-hee as the class that left a great impression on them.

The writings submitted in 2012 will be published as a book, including the non-awarded writings. These two contests will be held again in 2013.
