There was a major change for freshmen at UOS. For the first time, free health examinations were offered to students who entered UOS this year. From April 8 through 11, UOS freshmen could receive health check-ups at the Student Hall. It was hosted by the UOS Health Clinic, and the health examination was provided by the Green Cross Health Care Center.

Health care examination costs were all paid by UOS. The Health examinations included; anthropometry, chest X-ray examination, antigen of hepatitis type B and antibody of hepatitis type A, anemia, liver function, blood sugar, urine examination, etc. The purpose of this examination was to find out students’ illness such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, so that the UOS Health Clinic can offer services like health consultations, and information about chronic disease, obesity, nutrition, exercise and stopping smoking.

The examinations were administered from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., taking each student 30 minutes on average for the whole process. For those who did not take the health examination during the period, additional health examinations took place on April 19, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Some students who entered UOS in previous years, though, did express complaints as to why the examinations did not include the whole student population.

Kang Hyun-seo (Dept. of Urban Administration, ’13), after he had the health examination, said, “It is hard for students to get a health examination. We only visit the hospital when we are sick because getting a health examination is very expensive. Therefore, diseases that are not seen outside cannot be discovered easily. In my case, through this health examination I could find that I had high blood pressure. Therefore, I could prevent myself from developing a big illness. This health examination was a big help for my current life and my future.”
