UOS students and staff are volunteering for the community to reward their favors. The motto of UOS is “Rock of the People, Light of the World.” In keeping with this motto, UOS sets a goal to become a hub of education, research, and public service by 2018. UOS is trying to make an innovative university culture with educational research and public service working together in harmony. UOS is also a public university that is run by funds from Seoul City. Thus, UOS arranges many opportunities for university students to serve the community. A number of UOS students also are engaged in public service activities to repay to the community.

In order to become a hub of public service, UOS has set another goal: to have the “university mature together with the community.”  UOS has had a department devoted to social contribution since 2012. Hwang Gyeong-min (a worker from this section) said, “UOS held a mentoring service for low-income students from Dongdaemun-gu and Jungnang-gu. Not only students but members of UOS could take part in doing voluntary service. UOS students can become volunteers outside of the city of Seoul as well.

Last spring, some UOS students visited Jindo to do volunteer work for the bereaved families of the Sewol ferry tragedy. Every summer vacation, Students also go abroad to serve.” UOS also runs several community service organizations. UOS runs the Continuous Education Center and the Social Welfare Center. Citizens of Seoul can receive a lifelong education and welfare service through these organizations.
