▲ Timber truss structure is revealing
Architecture Engineering Lab, built in 1937, is one of the oldest buildings on the UOS campus, which recently has been renovated and awarded several architect-related prizes. It was formally the main building on campus, but is currently used as an exhibition hall and laboratory of Seoul Study. In 2013, Professor Lee Chung-ki of the Department of Architecture remodeled three buildings built in 1937 including the Architecture Engineering Lab under the project name Sunbyeockwon (“beautiful brick house”).

In the remodeled building, newly constructed bricks are aligned with existing bricks and an exposed timber truss roof structure. Lee Seok-yi (Dept. of Architecture, ’13) said “It is a pleasure to have a space for exhibiting student artwork on campus. Red bricks make the gallery, initially somewhat awkward and uncomfortable, yet more welcoming. Even students of different majors unrelated to architecture can easily enjoy the gallery and the various pieces of work exhibited inside.”
