The University of Seoul (UOS) has been ranked 49th in the Asia University Rankings for 2015 published by Times Higher Education (THE) on June 10. The UOS climbed 23 steps compared to its previous ranking at 72nd.

Five major areas were considered in the evaluation: Teaching (the learning environment), Research (volume, income and reputation), Citations (research influence), International outlook (staff, students and research) and Industry income (innovation). In these criteria, the UOS received an overall score of 34.6. In individual areas, the UOS scored exceptionally high in research influence, which accounts for 30 percent of the overall score, surpassing Seoul National University, and similar to the National University of Singapore, the second best in the overall ranking. Meanwhile, the UOS scored its lowest for Research.

In the Asia University Rankings for 2014, the UOS outperformed many other Korean universities in the general assessment. Among Korean universities, UOS ranked 7th, between Yonsei University (28th overall) and Hanyang University (54th overall). However, results have been quite different in other major surveys, such as the Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS). QS is a familiar institution that major Korean newspapers tend to quote more than THE. In QS’s ranking, the UOS is in 84th place, whereas Hanyang University takes 30th.
