The UOS Computer Center (UCC) plans to renew the school’s online portal system, WISE, which has been caused inconveniences to its members in December of 2016. The biggest change would be elimination of the website’s Active-X to construct more compatible and functional system.

Being used for 10 years, the WISE system is too old to adjust fast changing IT environment, limiting the access of its users. WISE has been able to be accessed only with Internet Explorer, not with other web browsers like Safari or Google Chrome. In addition to this problem, the system became vulnerable to virus and Hackers since Microsoft completely finished its service on Active-X in June, 2015. Therefore, the Center finally decided to rebuild the whole website, removing the Active-X and reorganize with more functional and simplified menus.

he officer of UCC, Gyeong-nam Bang, explained the reason it took so long to final decision even though the students and faculty members consistently demanded for renewing the WISE. Removing the Active-X requires rebuilding whole portal system. Bang said “It is possible to just move data to new portal system, but it will not work properly and does not guarantee compatibility and functionality.” In addition to that, rebuilding work causes huge price and long enough time. “It was hard to manage such a big project within the limited budget” he added.

Nonetheless, UCC has announced no upcoming plan for renewing the system’s mobile version. In the survey conducted by UCC on January 2016, students want the renewed version of mobile WISE.  The present version of mobile WISE is just limited to checking information. Students demanded more extension on its function; for example, modifying information, applying school events, and dealing with other school administrative works. According to Bang, however, UCC has received no official request from students yet. He added that the primary purpose of mobile WISE is to check information and if those functions are added, the mobile WISE will be seriously vulnerable to virus or hacking then.

The renewing work has started from February, collecting opinions from school’s administration and students. The center will hire Service Company through open-bid till April. Officer Bang expects the actual rebuilding work to start on May and finish by November for introducing it to UOS members on December.

* Active X is web browser plug-in that provides multiple functions including security, web payment and admission.
