Recently, self-broadcasting via the Internet is booming, setting a new trend in mass media. People self-broadcasting with selfie sticks are easily found all over the main streets of Seoul. Not so long ago, only a few people chose to release their UCC (User Created Contents) to unspecified viewers for personal satisfaction. However, since platforms like YouTube and Afreeca TV were created, allowing users to generate revenue through internet broadcasting, a lot of people are entering this market. These platforms allow them to create their own unique broadcasting contents and turn a profit more easily than before.

In this issue, we would like to introduce Lee Sung-eun, a p opular YouTuber. During his early career as a professional StarCraft gamer, this star player was beloved by his many fans, who closely followed his great StarCraft gameplay skills. Now, he broadcasts on the YouTube channel “Black Tube” and displays his game playing abilities to everybody, including more than one hundred thousand subscribers. His videos include various types of content. For example, in his “Do what you ask me to” section, he plays the game according to viewer requests.

Question 1. Why did you decide to become a YouTuber?
At first, I started broadcasting on YouTube as a hobby. However, after the Chinese professional LOL (League of Legends) game team where I served as the director was sold, I lost my regular job. So, I decided to do YouTube broadcasting as my daily work in October of last year.

Question 2. What are your own strengths as a StarCraft YouTuber?
During my gaming career, I saw many professional gamers who only played games without expressing their unique character traits. I wasn't content to consider myself such an ordinary gamer. Therefore, to create my own unique identity, I differentiated my strategy and prepared a funny and shocking winning ceremony to amuse my fans. Similarly, I tried to separate myself from other YouTube broadcasts with my own set of rules. Firstly, I was consistent with my basic content and did not make any drastic changes. Other YouTubers frequently change their content when they receive low evaluations from several viewers. Although I also received negative comments from some viewers, I stuck firmly to the same format. Because of this, a lot of viewers become accustomed to the steadiness of my content. Moreover, people began to enjoy it. Secondly, I shared my broadcast schedule with my viewers. Most StarCraft YouTubers do not have a broadcast schedule. It is very important to upload at an appointed time. If not, the viewers can become confused. It is a promise you must make with your viewers. Thirdly, I do not swear and my content does not contain anything that might be considered offensive or sexual in nature. Recently, as several YouTubers were criticized for their habitual swearing and offensive words, I decided to make my broadcast “clean” to receive more widespread support.

Question 3. Are there any problems you have experienced as a YouTube broadcaster?
I experienced many problems when I first started to broadcast on YouTube. Before my YouTube channel was well known to many people, the subscriber growth rate was very slow. Furthermore, I had to pay a monthly salary to my YouTube video editor. Accordingly, I had a hard time due to financial difficulties. In addition, some people who saw my videos made thorny demands. They claimed that some of my videos should be removed from my YouTube page because their names appeared in my videos. However, I could not find the reason why their names appeared in the videos. After these incidences, I began trying more thoroughly to conceal personal information in my videos.

Question 4. What are your goals?
In the short term, I want to expand the contents of my broadcast. I agonize every waking moment over which kind of content I should include. For example, while eating bread one day, I began to think of the crunching sound it made in my mouth and how that might be good material for my broadcast. Besides the gaming field, I am also interested in other fields like ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response), beauty, children’s activities, and pets. I want to try to combine my existing game content with other types of content to help broaden my influence on YouTube. Furthermore, I have always created a role model for myself in every challenging life situation. Since starting this YouTube broadcast, my role model has been the game YouTuber DaeDoseogwan (the great library, in English). Even now, I often observe his channel and try to learn his broadcasting strategies and skills. My long-term goals are to catch up with his great brand reputation and master maintaining a consistent broadcast. I believe that “if I do broadcasting hard and steadily, someday I could achieve such goals.”

Question 5. A Word to your fans
I always thank you for your great support and love for me and my broadcast. I will do my best to become a steadily more popular YouTuber and live up to your expectations. Please give me a boost, as I am constantly trying to show you how my images can develop from day by day. Thank you for reading this article and for considering the content.

He also gave advice to people who wish to become YouTubers: “Try to have your own colorful character while maintaining a diligent broadcasting attitude. Although it is difficult to make completely new content, you can still take existing content and give it your own flavor.”

StarCraft: The computer game StarCraft is a RTS (Real Time Strategy) game in which players compete for victory. It gained massive popularity during the 1990s and 2000s. Sales of the game's CD reached around 4.5 million, as of August 2017, and set a tremendous record. In particular, StarCraft had a great influence on the emergence of e-sports and played an important role in spreading “PC room” culture throughout Korea. Building off the strength of its popularity, a StarCraft professional league was created by many major enterprises. Following this, a large number of fans traveled to an e-sports stadium in Yongsan to watch professional gamers compete and cheer enthusiastically for these awesome players. Recently, a remastered version was released to celebrate the twenty-year anniversary of the original StarCraft’s launching.
