Starting in October, a program by Areumdaun Seodang, an educational organization, targeting the students of University of Seoul (UOS) was launched. Areumdaun Seodang is an educational organization composed of experts from various fields aiming to provide moral education and social empowerment for university students for free. The name Areumdaun Seodang means “beautiful seodang(traditional schoolhouse)”. The program is running for an entire year, from October 2017 to September 2018. The classes are being held at Cheonnong Hall every Saturday. 15 students have joined this program.
The program includes several courses besides weekend classes. Training camps, where students go through an advanced learning process, are scheduled twice during the winter. Also, the program includes field practice and volunteer activities. Students have to find a company and do field practice during the summer. Besides the field practice, students also have to do volunteer activities, which are considered part of the moral education, all year and the students must fulfill them by themselves. These courses are mandatory and emphasize practicing what the participants have learned.
The Main Library will provide the 150 books used in the program to support the participants (other students are also allowed to use the books freely, though).
In addition, the participants will be given special preference to join the programs of the Job and Foundation Career Support Center at UOS. “Taking part in a program scheduled throughout a whole year might burden some students,” explained an official, who requested anonymity, working at the Job and Foundation Career Support Center. “Students who have participated in this difficult program qualify for better treatment in employment support programs,” the official said.
