UOS offers numerous scholarships to both local and international students. One of the scholarships for international students is known as the Metropolitan Scholarship.

Since 2008, in an effort to give back to the international community and to promote strong relations between Seoul and her sister cities, the UOS launched the prestigious Metropolitan Scholarship in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Government. This scholarship is a master’s degree opportunity afforded to government officials from developing countries who meet the selection criteria. The scholarship is not only geared towards strengthening relations, but also seeks to invest in the urban development of countries that are still developing by providing the necessary skills to government officers. The Metropolitan Scholarship covers tuition, monthly living expenses, field trips, and accommodation for international students. It is an opportunity for them to live in Korea for 13 months, usually from August to August of the following academic year.

The students take classes in the university for that period and are expected to complete 34 credits within the two semesters. After 13 months, the students return to their respective countries and focus on their thesis for nine months, after which they return to Korea for the graduation ceremony. During their time in Korea they also have the opportunity to learn the Korean language and immerse themselves in Korean culture.

Since the time of its inception in 2008, the scholarship has afforded an opportunity to 168 government officials from countries such as Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Algeria, and Cambodia, to mention just a few. This scholarship contributes greatly to the multinational community of UOS and has promoted the name of the university outside Korea.
