The 2018 International Urban Film Festival was held from Oct. 10 to Oct. 12 at the Centennial Anniversary Hall and Lotte Cinema in Cheongnyangni Lotte Department Store. The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the University of Seoul (UOS) hosted this festival. In addition, this year the original Urban Film Festival was changed to the International Urban Film Festival in celebration of the University of Seoul’s centenary. This festival was composed of 37 films. There were also additional events that included guest visits, post-lectures, and free lectures. At this festival, university students took leading roles from planning to managing, and the citizens enjoyed it. This slogan of this festival was “Urban to Anyone.” Also, coexistence was the main theme of this year’s festival.

This festival was organized into various sections. First was the invitation section, which was composed of “Where are U” and “Who are U.” In addition, there was a special sector whose subject was “City of Asia.” Second was the competition section, which was composed of both domestic and international competitions. The domestic competitions included “From Today, Director” and “General Competition.” Especially, “From Today, Director” was a very distinctive sector in this festival, featuring directors who had never shot films before. They learned how to make films while participating in the preparations for the festival. Naturally, there was a non-competition sector in this section.

Kong Bo-reum (Dept. of Urban Sociology, ’18), a student who participated as a member of the festival promotional team, said “The films that were shown at this festival had distinct features. One of merits of this festival was that everyone who wanted to participate in this festival saw these magnificent movies for free.”
