A food market for the local community was held on October 18 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in front of the Student Hall. It was designed by the Student Council and sponsored by Dongdaemun-gu. Merchants from Cheongnyangni Fruit and Vegetable Market provided some fruits and vegetables for this market. A booth for the market with various kinds of fruits was set up in front of the basketball court. Types of fruits the Student Council prepared for the food market were apples, bananas, shine muscats, persimmons, and mandarins.
Extra events related to the food market were also held. One was pre-selling and the other was a Facebook event. Pre-selling was available for a week, from October 9 to 15. People could make reservations for foods they wanted to buy by filling out an order sheet. There was also a Facebook event on the official Student Council Facebook page. The Student Council chose five people who clicked “like” or tagged photos on their page and gave them free coupons for the market.
Although the food market seemed like it went pretty well, several problems were found through an interview with a member of the Student Council. First of all, a lack of promotion limited prospective consumers. Especially, advertising towards faculty was insufficient, so the food market failed to satisfy the need for fruit of the faculty. Secondly, a gap between supply and demand was considered a problem at the market. Demand exceeded supply, so some people were not able to buy what they wanted. Lastly, there was a problem in the process of delivery because the right amounts of food were not prepared for the market. Although the food market provided an opportunity to get fresh fruits easily, it should have been more thoroughly prepared, especially regarding the two points of balancing supply and demand and engaging in more active promotion.
