The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced the results of a design contest for the new “Future Convergence Hall” on Jan. 5. The Future Convergence Hall will be a space for education and research by undergraduate students who are majoring in science and engineering at the University of Seoul (UOS). SMG will construct this building at the location of the current 1st Engineering Building, which was completed in 1976.
This work is part of the initial stages of the “2040 Master Plan” at UOS. The 2040 Master Plan is a campus development plan that UOS set up in 2018. The goal of the plan is to respond flexibly to the rapid trends of the era. To implement this plan, UOS has significantly increased its investment in educational facilities. UOS increased investment by developing a campus expansion of the Dormitory and by establishing the Centennial Anniversary Hall. The construction of the Future Convergence Hall is the next project to follow.
The committee consisted of seven judges, including one professor at UOS. They conducted a two-step evaluation process for fairness and an architectural office named ODETO.A won the contest. The most outstanding aspect in the winning design was the accessibility between the surrounding facilities. Also, the design received high scores for its detailed floor plan, which integrated the characteristics of three separate departments (School of Environmental Engineering, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, and Dept. of Life Science). SMG aims to complete a design of the Future Convergence Hall by 2019 and to construct this building by 2022.
