The inaugural ceremony of the ninth President of the University of Seoul (UOS) was held at international conference hall in Centennial Memorial Hall from 4 p.m. on March 25. Including Park Won-soon: Seoul Metropolitan Government Mayor, Won Yoon-hee: the eighth UOS President, the former vice President, faculty members, staffs and students of UOS. About 300 participants attended to congratulate an official inauguration of the new President: Suh Soon Tak.
The President Suh is known as the first President who graduated our university. He graduated Department of Urban Administration on 1986. After getting a Master degree on Graduate School of Urban Administration in UOS at 1993, he was certified Graduate School of Newcastle University as a Ph. D degree of School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape on December 1998.
This ceremony prolonged one hour by several congratulative speeches. Above all, the President Suh said, "There are several crises on UOS: decreasing of the number of enrollment and confrontation of dynamical changes; called 4th Industrial Revolution. However, these crises can be an “opportunity” for our university. I will rebuild our university by leading the spirit of the times and values of the future, and so our school will be reborn as a leading university in the future. Also, I will make an effort so that UOS can foster professions who lead to solving urban issues of future, proceed the innovation of knowledge-based convergence research, and take a head of cooperation and sharing of values with the world and the community."
Afterward, the President Suh announced two big projects. The first project is to establish the Seoul Big Data Research Institute to make UOS a hub for data-based urban science researches that contributes to the resolution of urban problems by surveying and analyzing social, economic, cultural and technological data. The second project is to establish a global campus of our university in Asian cities: Ulaanbaatar, Mumbai, and Hanoi. This globalized blueprint has a purpose that UOS make a try to cultivate professional manpower in overseas cities; and contribute to solving urban problems and ultimately expanding the global capabilities of universities.
Through the inaugural speech, he delivered a specific plan and aspiration for university development. The UOS Times hope that the new President strengthens our own merits by cooperating faculties, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and most of all, students.
