Korean students these days don`t show much interest in university clubs. Rather they are interested in obtaining skills that would benefit them in getting a job after graduation.

They are much more eager for internship opportunities or some other activities that will decorate their resume. Biz Innovator, a brand-new club that prepares for competitions held by topnotch corporations in Korea such as LG, SK and Samsung, can interest those types of students.

On March 10, Biz Innovator had a conference presided over by Kim Yo-han,a junior at the Business Administration Department, to recruit new members. Despite the short history and small size of the club, at the conference student interest was higher than for any other university clubs. Mr. Kim gave a presentation on the purpose and position of the club. Although it was established only a year ago, 15 members successfully won the prizes in 10 competitions.

Some of the competitions they won last year were Hyundai Motors’s marketing competition, KT&G`s marketing competition, Economy Universiade organized by Chosun Ilbo, a Korean daily, and Naver, the most visited Korean portal, and CVB convention attraction proposal writing competition. To do so, mem bers during vacations spent around 25 days from 10 a.m. to up to 10 p.m. preparing for the contests by planning, making a presentation document and practicing interviews.

"The purpose of Biz Innovator is, most of all, to develop practical business skills by making PowerPoint documents and preparing for interviews," Mr. Kim said about the role of his club. "Also, it is to raise the school`s reputation which falls short of its actual level due to its small size and short history. Lastly, the various activities at the club will build strong human connections for you." Biz Innovator will select 15 new members this year.

According to Mr. Kim, the organization looks for diligence and enthusiasm in a candidate rather than good grades or any other talents as members had to spend much time together. Similar types of competition preparation clubs are only available at a number of well-known universities such as Yonsei University, Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University.
