To know about the development of pinhole photography in Korea, we met Park Gang-woo, the head of pinhole on-line community, for an interview.
How well-known are pinhole cameras in Korea?
In foreign countries, there are quite a few pinhole societies. And foreign physics professors have interest in pinhole cameras and have been doing academic research about them. On the other hand, Korean people think little of it, regarding it only as a hobby. For this reason, there is only one community working on pinhole photography in Korea: ‘pinhole-art’ (www.pinholeart.com).
The number of its members is not very large. I have cooperated with the Gyeong-gi Office of Education in teaching elementary school students. Students understand easily how photos are taken as I teach them about a pinhole camera.
The pinhole camera is easier to explain in terms of its principle of photo taking than other types of camera. How can we buy this camera?
And how much is it?
There is no store selling pinhole cameras in Korea because there are only a few buyers. However, you can buy a pinhole camera on the Internet site, ‘www.redcamera.co.kr’ and ‘photovill.com’. And the prices vary from 20,000 won to 200,000 won.
