"Wow, so many foreign students are at our campus!"

Actually during last summer vacation, lots of foreign students of different ethnicity could be seen on campus and in the dormitory. The very reason is the <2007 International Summer School>
The <20007 International Summer School> was held from July 17 to Aug. 18 this year. This program has been managed by the Institute of International Cooperation and Education (IICE) since 2000. The aim of the event is to offer an opportunity for comprehension of different cultures.

Ms. Shin Eunhwa, a program coordinator of the IICE said, "I suggest UOS students widen their international personal network by participating in programs such as the International Summer School. It is definitely an amazing opportunity for students to meet foreigners who come from over 10 countries."

Most of the students who participated in this Summer School have done so since the program began. The total number of participants was 82 (41 foreign students, 41 UOS buddies). The Forty-one foreign visitors came to Korea last July 17 and arrived at school with the guidance of their UOS buddy. The day after their arrival, Summer School orientation and a welcoming party was held.
Lee Sang Bum, president of the UOS, said in the reception "I hope all participants enjoy the International Summer School and practice understanding cultural diversity during the program period."

The programs of the ISS began in earnest on July 19. To begin with, all students attended the classes that they had chosen before the beginning of the ISS. Foreign students studied Korean and history. Korean students learned politics and economics of Asian countries.

In addition, participants had a great time while taking part in the course. Everyone, especially the foreign students, experienced traditional Korean legacy in Insadong, Changdeokgung, the National Museum of Korea and Icheon. And they also experienced the modern culture of Korea through NANTA performance, looking around Jongno, a trip to the DMZ (demilitarized zone), etc. Besides these outings, there were field trips to China and southern Korea. These series of opportunities made foreign students and UOS students become closer.

Nguyen Hoang Long, a student from Hanoi University of Mining & Geology in Vietnam said that "Actually, it was a hard time learning Korean for me but the history and modern culture of Korea were very interesting."

The ISS came to an end on Aug. 18. At a farewell party held in the international conference hall of the 21st Century Building, every participant was presented with a certificate and shared the sorrow of parting.

"In order to be a future-oriented and challenging professional, it is indeed necessary for students to acquire international way of thinking. I think this ISS was a good opportunity for all of you." Jang Wonho, dean of the IICE said.

Kim Hyun-wook, a junior of the Dep. of Business Administration who participated in this program, said. "It was a great time with many students and I have come to understand other cultures by sharing many events with foreign friends."
