From now on we have an opportunity to study more about China every Monday and Thursday in the UOS! This lecture held by the Dept. of Chinese Language & Culture which has been newly established this year. Under professor Lee Soong-hwun, twenty-five students study not only how to speak Chinese but also Chinese culture.

During the 21st century, China has accomplished rapid economic growth and exercised great influence over international society. So international society has started to take an interest in China. This new department was basically founded to educate true specialist needed in exchange with China. The UOS has opened student registration for this department from 2008. NEWS@UOS would like to meet this new class - `Intensive Chinese`!

It is natural for freshmen to be a little strained when they attend class for the first time. If their major is in a foreign language which they hadn`t had the opportunity to learn before, the extent of the tension would be maximized. It is because they might think the course would be very difficult and they would be unaccustomed to it. But you don`t have to worry. As this lecture was founded this year, the class focuses on learning Chinese. Of course the level would be beginner. Therefore the goal of this semester is to acquire a natural pronunciation and facilitate the learning of Chinese.

There is another attraction in this course. It is that the students will learn the culture of China as well as the language. From the 8th week of the course the focus is on introducing China`s culture. Professor Lee said "To become a real China specialist we should satisfy not only the need for fluent linguistic ability but also a wide understanding of Chinese culture. Through this inclusive study, we can be a versatile experts on China." So, the professor will introduce different cultural subjects during each class.

"I want students to be competent people with excellent linguistic ability and people with a broad outlook of Chinese culture through this course. Of course you might be a little hesitant to learn a new language and different world. But you don`t have to be nervous. The only thing you require is curiosity about new world and pure passion for learning." With professor Lee, you have a chance to become an intelligent cultured person. It seems that professor Lee is full of desire to build a little China in the UOS. And NEWS@UOS also hopes that we can meet junior Chinese experts in the UOS someday.
