Various events were held to mark the UOS’ 90th anniversary. The concerts, ‘Special Concert’ celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the UOS by Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and ‘The Garden Classical Festival of May’ by the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra were held and were huge hits with students and citizens alike. ‘The 90th Anniversary of the UOS Exhibition’ shows the history of the UOS from April 24 to December 5 in the UOS Museum.
The UOS held a ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary on April 30. Not only were Lee Sang-bum (President of the UOS), Oh Se-hoon (Mayor of Seoul), and Lee Hae-gyu (Chairman of the UOS Alumni Association) in attendance but lots of UOS students also participated in this ceremony where the ‘Vision 2018: Top Brand UOS’ plan was proclaimed. ‘Vision 2018’ expresses willingness for the UOS to become a top five university in Korea and consolidate its place as a world- renowned center for urban sciences.
The UOS was founded as Kyung Sung Public Agricultural College in 1918 and grew to gain university status in 1986. Since then the UOS has been selected as being an excellent specialized university for six years as a result of having been interested in Urban Sciences and promoting this field. The UOS held the first international license in architecture in Korea as well as winning the right to establish a School of Law.
The motivating force behind for the development of the UOS has been Lee Sang-bum and students who entered the UOS with outstanding grades. Since Lee Sang-bum took office as president of the UOS, the UOS’ finances and facilities have grown two-fold and 1.7 fold respectively.
Lee Sang-bum said, “To accomplish ‘Vision 2018’ and greet the 100th anniversary of the UOS, the UOS needs more positive change and innovation. So, all members of the UOS must make an effort to develop the UOS. I want to emphasize that education and competitive study programs are qualified only when professors and students make a joint effort. If all members of the UOS would be eager and confident of doing better in the field of research, the UOS would become a more prominent university.”
Like the willingness in ‘Vision 2018’, NEWS@UOS expects that the UOS will be more developed toward its 100th anniversary in 2018.
