On September 25, the University of Seoul (UOS) announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SK Telecom (SKT) to cooperate with industry-academic programs related to artificial intelligence (AI). UOS and SKT agreed to cooperate in many areas, including in the design and operation of the artificial intelligence curriculum and the participation of excellent field experts. These resources will be used by the Department of Artificial Intelligence, which is newly established to maximize the use of artificial intelligence in industries and societies and to lead the development of innovative AI technologies. In addition, the Department of Applied Chemistry, as well as the Department of Artificial Intelligence, will recruit new students for the 2021 academic year. This department will be established to strengthen the capacity of convergence research to lead future science and technology.

The Department of Artificial Intelligence allows students to acquire core technologies based on fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, and logic. In addition, it fosters talented students who can creatively utilize complex artificial intelligence technology to derive solutions for various problems. It also plans to expand and improve numerous programs in conjunction with the educational goals of the Department of Artificial Intelligence.

The Department of Applied Chemistry provides an in-depth curriculum so that students can lead to the development of the chemical industry with creative and leading attitudes. Applied Chemistry is a basic science in almost all fields related to substances, such as advanced materials, bio-health, and energy industries. It is expected to provide a foundation for conducting complex research to solve urban problems in an aging society and maximize synergy with related departments.

As a result of this MOU, it is expected that cooperation between UOS and SKT in the field of artificial intelligence technology and operation of the curriculum will encourage the development of competent human resources. The MOU and the new departments will serve as a turning point to strengthen the competitiveness of UOS by fostering the talent needed for rapidly developing highly advanced technology and preemptively responding to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
