November is a month of Preventing alcohol-related harm. It has been designated since 2009 to proactively respond to drinking accidents and to promote the importance of preventing alcohol abuse. Recently, more and more people are drinking alcohol to relieve depression and anxiety because of COVID-19. In particular, as youth unemployment is getting worse due to COVID-19, people in their 20s are relieving their stress by drinking alcohol. Furthermore, drinking alone or at home is likely to become a habit, focusing only on drinking. This habitual drinking increases the amount of alcohol consumed, and in severe cases, this can lead to alcohol dependence, so caution is needed. If they continue to cope with stress drinking alcohol, they can become alcoholics and be exposed to various accidents. Therefore, the Korea Health Promotion Institute (KHPI) and Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) are promoting various campaigns to prevent damage caused by year-end drinking and to spread the culture of cutting down on drinking. These campaigns encourage social distancing and abstinence of drinking at year-end gatherings. In addition, they will carry out activities to prevent the harmful effects caused by the recent increase in drinking alone and drinking at home. They conduct a “relay event” to encourage people to participate and pledge to abstain from drinking. They also plan to introduce information related to stop drinking and practice rules related to COVID-19 and operate proper drinking culture education.

These are the rules for cutting down on drinking in life.

1. Avoid drinking as much as possible.
2. Don't force a person to drink.
3. Don't drink for three days after drinking.

Just following these simple rules can establish a healthy drinking culture. Why don't we follow these rules, reduce drinking, and live healthy lives?
