“Today, it wasn’t so freezing in our gallery because we kept the temperature only 2 degrees below zero. If lots of guests visit our gallery, we keep the temperature 5 degrees below zero.”

The staff told me to finish the report and gave me a hot coffee. The ICE GALLERY keeps the temperature below zero and has many different sculptures of different themes each season. When it is hot in the summer, they operate an indoor pavilion. In the coming cool winter, they will exhibit big ice sculptures in places such as Olympic Park.

“The main guests are foreigners and children. If you don’t make a reservation, sometimes you can’t enter the gallery on the weekend.”

The exhibitions in the gallery are really small and charming. (I couldn’t use the ice slide, because I couldn’t put my hips on the small slide). You can see a bed (of course, you cannot lie down), a flush toilet, desk and chair, also there is an ice folk village, an ice cafe, ice dinosaurs and so on. The tourists frome the Middle East where winter doesn’t exist are fascinated with the ice and enjoy fully themselves.

“If you came in with your friends, we would prepare you to make ice sculptures. Usually, most of guests took the ice cup that they made by themselves.”

Getting through a ticket office, you can see sharp instruments and some desks. When guests visit gallery, they not only view the ice exhibit, but also they can make simple ice sculptures. In winter, the event goes on outdoors at Sangam-dong World Cup Stadium with an exhibition of expert’s sculptures.

“We established that gallery 3 years ago. We are a group that invites other events or festivals to exhibit ice sculptures, not fixed.”

There are not lots of ice sculptures in the actual ice gallery. The size, expenses and target are exhibits for children, so it is not geared for university students. But, this group always holds various themes and events. (www.iceart.co.kr - more information).

“A lot of TV programs and newspapers have introduced our gallery. But our main guests are children and foreigners, so we weren’t known to university students.”
