Today, many people show their lives through Instagram. Everyone on Instagram always looks happy. Because of the feature of Instagram as a place to express themselves, people upload only good things on Instagram. However, many people think that what they see on Instagram shows all about other people’s lives. A post about comparing oneself with other people on Instagram is often seen on Everytime, the university online community. When we are in a difficult situation, the happiness of others can make us lonely and depressed.
Student A(School of Liberal Studies, ’21) said, “When I saw Instagram while studying during the exam period, I used to feel depressed because other people seemed to be having a pleasant life, such as going on a trip.”
“This experience was repeated many times and I was stressed out. So now, I am not paying attention to Instagram and I do not get stressed now. Instagram is useful for keeping your own precious memories. However, it is not good to compare yourself to other people too much.”
There is a saying that Instagram edits and shows the brightest highlights of our lives. We need to think about this: there is no one who is always happy. The bright side of our lives exists because the dark side also exists. If there is only happiness in life, we would not feel happy about it. In the same vein, there are happy moments because difficult times also exist. Your life, in which you overcome hardships and eventually get happiness, is even more beautiful than Instagram.
