The revised school regulations about percentile rank of Grade Point Average(GPA) are applied from April 29, 2021. Until then, University of Seoul(UOS) students have had a lower percentile rank of GPA compared to students from other universities. The difference in the percentile rank of GPA was about -0.5 to -1 when the same credits are obtained from other universities and UOS. This is because UOS has adopted the standard using an unfavorable conversion formula.

High-ranking UOS students suffered considerable disadvantages in admission into College of Pharmacy, Law School, and Medical School because the percentile rank of GPA has a significant impact on admission to these schools. The difference of 0.5 and 1 may seem meaningless in terms of numbers, but in admission to Law School(College of Pharmacy, Medical School), which is highly competitive, this subtle difference can determine the result.

Therefore, students(especially, students who are preparing for Law School)  consistently suggested changing the percentile rank standard of GPA to the school office and the school homepage bulletin board which is called 'I suggest to the university president'. This year, the request of students that have continued for years is finally accepted by the school. The UOS suggested to the Ministry of Education that all universities need to apply the same percentile rank standard for grade evaluation. And finally, school regulations were revised to improve the percentile rank calculation method of GPA.

It is impressive that the institutional unfairness is resolved by students' continuous suggestions. As UOS students can compete with students from other universities more fairly, they will be able to advance toward their dreams more easily.
