It’s so warm and sometimes hot, and students finished their midterm examinations. Festivals start in many universities. This festival may means excitement to freshman and familiarity to seniors. However; many students are not experienced with these feelings. When they were high school students, they had to study uninteresting subjects without reason, because everyone had to, and this meaningless study was a concession.
The reason why they study meaningless subject is because many people around them say, “Because of the economic crisis, if you want to get a job, you must study TOEIC, TOEFL, or you must get a good GPA or you must obtain lots of licenses and so on.” They are indoctrinated, and they do not start to think about reason why I go on to university or things that are my favorites. Stress from moral pressure make them machines for getting good marks. They don’t keep their composure to think about themselves.
Educational Testing Services (ETS) regards the market of Republic of Korea as one of the most important markets because many Koreans enter themselves for an examination like TOEIC, TOEFL. It means Koreans invest money, time to learn English. But paradoxically, the ability of Koreans produced low scores. It never means that Koreans are dull or dumb, but they think the English of Koreans is wrong. Koreans consider English ability as the score of an English examination like TOEIC, TOEFL, and many enterprises think that this is a more important score than real ability in English.
Recently the University of Seoul (UOS) student council invited Googler Kim Tae-won. He was passing many examinations for service in a business company. But he chose Google even though he needed five months just for the interview for an entrance. It was shocking accident in Korea. But if you think matter over and over, the accidents are a natural result because of what he wanted and some certificates of enterprise that he got were not important to him.
In this century, many people are in the age of limitless competition, and we prefer to shown digitization of ability opposed to real ability. Not to mention, the digitization is important as just a means to display my abilities, moreover, if we don’t understand the fact that university students are actually a privileged class. Therefore, we should know what I want!! More importantly, we should choose real ability versus digitization of ability!!
