From May 14, the “Memory and Meeting” exhibition which commemorate the 30th anniversary of the struggle in May 1991 is held at the Korea Democratization Movement Memorial Park in Icheon. Compared to days such as the April Revolution and the Gwangju massacre, which are important in the history of democracy in the Republic of Korea, the perception of the struggle in May 1991 is relatively insignificant.

The May struggle was a public struggle that drove the Roh Tae-woo administration, which had returned to authoritarian rule through public security and the merger of the three parties, into the biggest crisis. It took place until the leadership withdrew completely after the death of Kang Kyung-dae due to the indiscriminate suppression of Baekgoldan(plain clothes policeman). More than 2,300 rallies were held nationwide, and 11 students, the poor, and workers burned themselves in the process.

The exhibition features six themes, including the background and development of the struggle. From audio-visual materials on democracy to participation, spaces are neatly arranged. I was grateful and overwhelmed to see the determination of my peers or younger friends in that era. People can be today because of those days of struggle. At the same time, it reminded many of our young people today.

The "Memory and Meeting" exhibition runs from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding Mondays, and runs until Oct. 29. I hope more people will be aware of this incident and visit the exhibition.
