On June 21, after five days of intense effort, the students got an answer from the school that the provision of the joint degree system will be withdrawn.
On June 16, the University of Seoul (UOS) and Seoul National University of Science and Technology signed an MOU that included the operation of the joint degree system. It was an arbitrary decision of the UOS president without any communication or consultation with the students. The next day, June 17, UOS students heard about this news through the media. Since the joint degree system is a serious matter that could weaken the identity of the school, students were really outraged at the school and the president for their unilateral action.
Although students were very angry, they calmly devised ways to delete the joint degree system clause. First, they filed a complaint about opposing the school's arbitrariness and the joint degree. Nearly 500 complaints were posted on the school website.
Second, the students created an open chat room to gather other students' opinions on ways to prevent the implementation of the joint degree system. Until the situation was resolved, 471 students participated in open chat and shared their opinions.
In this open chat room, students decided to put up a poster and hold a protest if the negotiation between the students and the school broke down. Many students voluntarily took part in printing and putting up the poster and maintaining order of the protest.
Finally, June 21, the chairperson of the board of representatives and the student president of the College of Natural Sciences had a meeting with the head of the school planning department. The negotiation was successful: it was decided to amend the MOU by deleting the provision of the joint degree system.
The students, who are the owners of the school, protected the school although they were in the final exam period. From now on, UOS should actively communicate with students. Especially, when conducting a project, students' opinions should be actively reflected.
