Since February 23, “Pokémon bread” has gone back on sale in 16 years after the product was discontinued in 2006. SPC Samlip Corporation has begun to produce seven types of pastries with 159 different types of stickers inside. Each product includes one sticker of a character from the Pokémon games and cartoons. According to the company, 250,000 breads a day were sold during the first two weeks after the release.

Apparently, this incident is due to the popularity of collectible stickers that raise nostalgia for the good old days when such breads with character stickers inside were common. However, because demand has been outstripping supply, a lot of people fail to buy the bread every day. Many convenient stores have pinned the notice up on the door to notify customers that the product is sold out. Therefore, Korean online secondhand marketplaces are full of trades of Pokémon breads and stickers. The rise in price there is preposterous; some people even sell stickers of rare characters for more than 50,000 KRW while the retail price of the product is 1,500 KRW.

To buy the bread at the original price successfully, people wait outside the stores before they open or before the time when new products arrive at stores. As a result, the company’s stock price jumped right after the release of Pokémon bread. In addition, this trend has been a big help for Fantastix Corporation, the sticker making company, which was having financial hardship because of the pandemic.
