On April 26, the number of people who agreed on a petition that asks heavy punishment of a criminal who killed about 50 street cats surpassed 500 thousand. A lot of people are furious about this crime, and they demand 3 years in prison and the finement of 3,000 KRW, which is the maximum sentence for act of animal cruelty.
This case made a lot of people furious, and there are several reasons. First, the criminal tortured street cats – even a pregnant one – in cruel way such as letting a cat starve to death, hitting a cat with lots of tools, and doing water torture. Second, he filmed those acts and shared them in an online chatting room. In that chatting room, there were other people in other area who tortured street cats and also shared the video of their own. Moreover, the criminals have no reasons to torture them, but they just do it because they “can.”
This case brought the opinion that cruelty of animals must be more severely punished, because the criminals’ motive can be expressed to other innocent beings, such as young children. Citizens expressed their anxiety of the fact that there is an elementary school nearby this criminal’s home. As a matter of fact, in The United States, cruelty of animals is handled separately, as the sign of violent crimes.
The surviving cats were rescued in shelters, and it breaks people’s hearts that some of them still are fond of human beings. As can be seen in the above video, one of the cats absolutely loves human hands despite all the suffering she went through. The UOS Times hopes that the society where the innocent creatures can live without any suffering could be built based on proper social regulations that can protect them.
