Recently, there can be seen a lot of people who use electric scooters. In fact, there are numerous businesses that provide them, such as Beam, Swing, and Xing Xing, which signed the MOU with University of Seoul (UOS).

There also are plenty of reasons that people use electric scooters, making consistent supply demand. First, it is convenient. People can use it if they have a driver's license, whenever they want. Those scooters can be used with applications that the businesses above provide. People can use electric scooters when their way to somewhere is too far to go on foot, but too short to take public transportations. Moreover, users can return scooters wherever they want, even in the middle of a street. Second, as the weather gets mild, they can be used as a part of a picnic to enjoy the summer breeze and nice weather.

However, there are dark sides of electric scooters. First is the fact that users hardly wear helmets, which is very dangerous since electric scooters have no safety devices. This business is relatively new, so there is no awareness of wearing safety devices such as helmets and knee pads.  This can cause a serious injury if someone falls while riding. Recently, a person who rode the scooter without a helmet had a car accident and ended up in an intensive care unit. There is another problem of where to put those scooters, since they do not have their own spots to be parked. As can be seen in the above picture, an electric scooter is blocking parking spots. This problem has been mentioned in Korean society because some scooters even block the braille road for blind people. In these cases, the advantage that people can return the scooters wherever they want causes problems.

These pros and cons that electric scooters bring to this society certainly will not disappear. Users should care for their safety and other’s, too. Moreover, it would be best to have proper regulations for this rising business, for the sake of both users and non-users.
