For the first time after the outbreak of COVID-19, two major water shows of South Korea: the WATER BOMB festival and PSY The Water Show are going to be held soon this summer. The former show is the largest water gun festival in Korea that features various famous singers and performances. The latter one is the exclusive concert by PSY, the singer of “Gangnam Style”. Every summer, PSY’s water show used to be held in numerous cities of the country, pouring a great amount of water to the audience during the whole time of the show. PSY recently appeared on a Korean TV talk show and revealed that it takes about 300 ton of drinking water each day of his concert. A lot of people are looking forward to these shows that will let them endure the heat and relieve stress. However, there also has been a controversy over the shows regarding their waste of water. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Korea has been suffering from a decrease in precipitation, and the Soyang River has been experiencing extreme drought this year. After one Korean actress publicized this on her social media, many people have begun to argue over this problem. Some people think that the water shows should be canceled in such situation; they are suspicious about the reason why the shows must require the use of water. On the other hand, some others have claimed that the amount of water used in the shows is not a big deal considering the amount of personal water consumption per day; it is about 295 liter according to the Ministry of Environment. In addition, there is another concern because of the water during the concerts that would make the virus easier to spread. However, despite the controversy and criticisms, the water shows are still going to be held. The UOS Times hopes there is a way to solve the problems, but without taking people’s entertainment in three years.
