Didn't you feel it was too hot in June? On the morning of June 27, 2022, Seoul’s lowest temperature was recorded at 25.4 degrees Celsius, the highest figure since observation. There are more than 30 regions where the tropical night phenomenon has been observed. It is the first time in 118 years that such a hot night has appeared in late June since weather observation began in 1904.
The term "tropical nights" refers to a phenomenon in which the minimum temperature does not fall below 25 degrees. Hot and humid southwest winds cause the tropical night’ phenomenon. The North Pacific high pressure in the southeast and the low pressure in the northwest raised heat and moisture. The water temperature in the West Sea is high, and more water vapor has been introduced. Experts say that the effects of global warming cannot be ignored, too. The tropical night is expected to continue until the end of June, mainly on the east coast and the south.
People are gradually experiencing the 'climate crisis' with their bodies. The global epidemic, flowers blooming earlier than usual, and tropical nights that came earlier became an opportunity for people to recognize the ‘climate crisis.’ Also, the global drought and food crisis are putting people in a dangerous situation.
The climate crisis is not a problem of the future generation, but a problem facing people in this generation right now. Efforts in many ways will have to be continued to cope with the climate crisis. Individual response is necessary, but structural and institutional response efforts should also be made. It is time for people to change their consciousness of feeling the climate crisis as an urgent "my problem" right now.
