Cho Hyun-soo, head of the Ministry of Environment's Green Transition Policy Division, announced nuclear energy will be included in the green taxonomy draft.
Green taxonomy is a list that consists of economic activities that are environmentally friendly. It describes those activities as green hence giving the name green taxonomy.

The EU parliament also voted to include gas and nuclear energy in its own green taxonomy two months ago.

With nuclear energy being added on the list, funding for reactors and researching new technologies will become easier. Reactor modules such as small module rectors (SMR) and accident tolerant fuels (ATF), will qualify for low-interest loans by the government.

Unlike the previous administration, Yoon Suk-yeol and his cabinet has emphasized the value of nuclear energy as a means of achieving carbon neutrality and as a new product to export. The government has been increasing its restoration of the nuclear energy industry and pushing overseas sales.

In addition to finalizing the contract on the sale of equipment and material for and the construction of the main and auxiliary buildings on the turbine islands at the Russia-backed El-Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt in August, the Korean government also has been pitching for nuclear reactor projects in Czech Republic and Poland.

With nuclear power on the K-taxonomy list, the environment ministry is expected to face harsh criticism from some environmental groups. Public hearings will be held about the issue in October, the final decision is planned to be unveiled by the end of the year.
