Musical is a minor hobby in South Korea. Due to the expensive tickets, public are not easy to access to performing arts. Generally, the VIP seats are about 150 dollars. Yet, these days the ticket price is getting more expensive. The musical “West side story” started the increase of VIP seats for 160 dollars. Subsequently, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” which is famous for the movie of the same name is under controversy because of its rise in ticket prices. The cheapest seat on the third floor is 80 dollars and the VIP seat is about 180 dollars which means ten thousand won per eight minutes. Musical “Beethoven” which is a Korean original musical, is also being criticized because of the high price. The VIP seat is increased to 140 dollars. There are several reasons in the increase of ticket price. Firstly, the exchange rate has increased. Since licensed musicals need the purchase of foreign copyrights, signing a contract for the publication rights costs a lot more money. In case of “Moulin Rouge!”, the whole cost of production was 28 million dollars on the site, due to the splendid stage settings and the numbers composed by existing pop music which requires high royalty. These factors are linked to expensive copyright and consequent increase in ticket price. Korean original musicals also cost a lot of production budget. Original musicals are first work made by domestic capital, domestic production crew and technology. Thus, it takes long time to produce. Musical “Beethoven” took seven years. This part of the structure is hard to make a profit. However, the consumers are criticizing this ridiculously high price. Some musical fans are declaring boycott against to the unprecedented rise in prices. They are insisting that these measures by musical production companies will make musical culture more minor.
