The conflict continues between the disability advocacy group and the Seoul Metropolitan Government

Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination (SADD), the biggest disability advocacy group of South Korea, resumed its subway protests at City Hall Station on Seoul Subway Line 1 on March 23. It has been two months since SADD announced the suspension of the subway protests. SADD attempted to board the subway at City Hall Station but failed to do so due to the confrontations by the Seoul Transportation Corporation and the police. This caused congestion at the subway station, causing a series of five-minute delays. After the subway demonstration, SADD announced that they are planning to continue the protests at City Hall Station on Seoul Subway Lines 1 and 2, requesting conversations with the Seoul Metropolitan Government. SADD decided to postpone the protests at Seoul Subway Line 4, where protests were mostly held in the past, until April 20.

The reason why SADD resumed subway protests again is to call for talks with the Mayor of the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The group is demanding to have a talk about the topic of the disabled’s deinstitutionalization and the increase in the budget for the right of mobility. SADD criticized the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s investigations, claiming that the government is continuing to “kill SADD” by conducting target investigations.

In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government strongly requested the suspension of protests, saying that they are fully open to communications. They also clarified that the part SADD criticized as target investigations has nothing to do with “killing SADD.” Rather, the Seoul Metropolitan Government urged SADD to actively participate in solving the problems with dialogue. With the Seoul Metropolitan Government appealing for its intention to communicate, the disability advocacy group said they would try to solve the problem through conversations with the government without holding subway riding protests immediately.
