“The world develops as time goes by, and various forms of life have been emerging with changes in society. However, discrimination and hatred toward minorities have also surfaced as members of society cannot keep up with the pace because of amazingly rapid changes. Through the exhibition, why not listen to minorities and think about what we can do for a better society where everyone can live happily?”

As the theme clearly shows, the exhibition focuses on various types of minorities in the world such as single moms by choice, the elderly, Korean Americans, children, sexual minorities, disabled people, and even animals. The exhibited works are organized into ten categories.

  1. Children’s rights: The book <The World of Children>, The movie <Children are Fine>
  2. Adolescent rights: The book <The Death of an Unknown Boy>
  3. Poverty among youth: The book <I became a Dad’s Dad>
  4. The non-married adoptive family: The book <I am not married and raise children>
  5. Elderly rights: The movie <The Bacchus Lady>, The book <Without Business Cards>
  6. Women’s rights: The book <When we Call Ourselves Us>, The book <Feminist City>
  7. Sexual minorities’ rights: The movie <Moonlit Winte>, The book <Moonlit Winte: Scenario>, <Moonlit Winte: Making Book>, The movie <A Fantastic Woman>, The album <If You Love Me>
  8. Animal rights: The movie <Underdog>, The book <The Hill of Abandoned Dogs>, The movie <Don't Feed the Stray Cats>, The book <Stray Cat Guide for Coexistence>
  9. Disability: The movie <Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish>, The album <Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish>, The movie <Coda>, The book <We are Coda>
  10.  Racism: The book <Somewhere there are Fighting Migrant Women>, The book <Perilla Leaf Struggle>, The Book <Minor Feelings>

The works attempt to convey an important message regarding minorities, asking people to re-examine the society they live in. The book <The Death of an Unknown Boy> narrates the story of Kim Dong-jun, who took his own life after facing severe violence and verbal abuse at work. There are only two chapters in the book: Kim Dong-jun and Kim Dong-juns. He was a normal high school student who wanted to become a programmer. Before graduation, he entered field practice at a major company, and that was the first time he was facing a bigger society than school. However, he eventually ended up packing sausages at a food factory. He also spent extremely long hours at work and faced brutal violence from a senior worker. He was completely unprotected and ended up taking his own life. In the second chapter, people who share similar pain to Kim Dong-jun are showcased. The family of Kim Dong-jun and the labor attorney who was in charge of his case are also a part of the chapter. The book discloses the dark aspects of society, while mourning every Kim Dong-jun in the world. The book raises many questions.

“The works in the exhibition are truly inspiring, and I believe the theme of the exhibition is also worth considering. I am glad that students had an opportunity to give thought to minority and social issues that have been neglected through this meaningful exhibition,” said Heo Chae-eun (Dept. of English Language and Literature, ‘21). The exhibition offers a great opportunity to look into minorities’ lives through many relatable works. Moreover, it consoles visitors by showing them different, yet suggesting that they have gone through similar experiences and struggles. The UOS Times recommends that readers visit the exhibition and experience the diversity of the world. It is going to be a valuable time to experience other people’s worlds.
