In Oak Valley, in the mountains of Wonju, Gangwon province, one museum can be seen encircled by forest. It is the Museum SAN. The museum is surrounded by a pool, which is called a Water Garden. The water shows the reflection of the structure, giving a mysterious impression to visitors. The building looks as if it was floating on the top of the water. Archway, the road for the entrance, is crossing the Water Garden so that visitors can traverse the water. In the outdoor of the museum the red sculptures named “For Gerard Manley Hopkins” are displayed everywhere. They are artworks of Mark di Suvero, built with waste. Japanese star architect, Ando Tadao designed the Museum SAN and its surroundings. He wanted to make the visitors feel cozy in nature. Thus, the museum is in the middle of the forest, inducing the disconnection to crowded cities. The museum is built with exposed mass concrete owing to his love affair with concrete. Since it is an easy-to-access medium, he used to apply it as a material. He popularized the use of exposed mass concrete. Even though Ando is a nonscience major, he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is the most prestigious in the architecture industry. His first exhibition in Korea is being held at Museum SAN. The title is “Youth”. People can see many sketches and models of his achievements such as the Naoshima Project, and Bourse de Commerce. “Youth” means continuous challenges and passion of Ando. A sculpture of a green apple is lying on the front door. The fresh and evergreen apple is a symbol of youth, the topic of the exhibition.
