According to the research conducted by Albamon, a famous mobile application for part-time job recruitments in Korea, six out of ten college students “always” do part-time jobs, during vacations and semesters. In fact, it can be burdensome for students to do part-time jobs and study simultaneously.

Then, why do students always engage in part-time jobs despite their hectic academic schedule? The main reason is economic burden. The incessant price rise leaves them with no other option. In addition, the desire for independence makes many students seek part-time jobs after entering college. There are different types of part-time jobs that college students usually undertake, including private tutoring, teaching assistants, and working at convenience stores and cafés. The UOS Times investigated into the types of part-time jobs opted by students and their lives.

Private tutoring and teaching assistants are popular jobs among students, especially those who want to earn a lot of money. The most attractive characteristic of these two part-time jobs is high wages. They are also preferred by students majoring in education or those who want to avoid physical labor. “I started working as a teaching assistant to raise money for a trip to Europe. My dream is traveling around Europe with my friends, without any financial help from my parents.” said Cho Jeong-yeon (Dept. of English Language and Literature, ‘22).

Many students work in cafés and restaurants. These places are the most universal spots whenever people think of part-time jobs. They are also one of the most preferred part-time jobs as related experience is rarely required. Most employers provide or pay for meals, and, in the case of cafés, employees can prepare and drink beverages whenever they want to.

The next spot is a convenience store. Most employees can sit during working hours, which is a big bonus point compared to a job in a café or a restaurant. Except for certain times when logistics come in, the work itself is relatively not difficult in comparison to similar jobs. Korean words such as “pyunsooni” and “pyundori” are used to refer to those working in convenience stores, which is a common occupation in Korea.

Most students have submitted applications at least once to work in school facilities such as a department office or a student’s office, which are well-known for good working conditions. It is an effective way to use the break time between classes as working places are nearby, inside the university. Naturally, these positions are in high demand. Furthermore, these jobs are usually secured on a first come, first serve basis.

A witness at an election is another favored part-time job. The qualifications required are simple; anyone with the right to vote can apply. Employees must work all day, which results in high wage. What makes it more attractive is that it is a short-term part-time job, and people can even work for just one day. Recruitment usually takes place through the National Election Commission website.

Have you ever seen anyone working in a wedding hall? Though this kind of part-time job is not common, it is quite unique. It is also a short-term job, and working hours are fixed to weekends as most weddings are held on Saturday or Sunday in Korea. Students who are busy on weekdays or those who want to experience the Korean wedding culture are suitable for this job. “I worked at the wedding hall near my house with my friends, and it was a remarkable experience. I just applied to earn money, but it was a good chance to experience wedding culture! I think it is a great part-time job, especially during vacation.” said Yu Ha-neul (Dept. of English Language and Literature, ‘21).

When taking certificate exams, have you ever thought: “Who are these exam supervisors?” In fact, some are hired through part-time job announcements. Those who want to get this job must pay special attention to related public notices as most recruitments take place on a first come, first serve basis. It is also a short-term position, which means it is popular among students.
