Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) released a report titled “Characteristics of the MZ generation’s media use” in June 2023. The report compares smart device ownership rates, media service utilization, e-commerce utilization rates, online financial transactions, perceived privacy violations during online activities, and response to media information acquisition comparing Generation X, Baby boomers, Millennials, and Generation Z. Generation X refers to the generation born approximately between 1965 and 1980, and Baby Boomers refer to those born before Generation X. Millennials are those born between 1980 and 1996, and Generation Z is those born after 1996.

According to the report, the MZ generation is familiar with owning smart devices and using various media services. In particular, millennials have a high percentage of smart devices such as high-end smartphones, tablet PCs, wearable devices, and are also using OTT, SNS, and content subscription services the most actively. When watching videos, MZ generation mainly watches non-real-time using smartphones and PCs, while X generation and baby boomers watch real-time through home TVs. Millennials and Generation Z used smartphones for an average of more than three hours a day, while baby boomers used TVs for more than four hours.

Furthermore, e-commerce and online financial transactions are most actively used by millennials in various ways, while Generation Z uses Internet and mobile simple remittance services more than Generation X. Millennials are more concerned about privacy violations during online activities, and tend to check facts, verify validity, and search for additional information when acquiring media information, while Generation Z has lower privacy concerns or response to media information. This suggests that there is a difference between millennials who grew up at a time when the Internet began to spread and Generation Z who grew up in an environment where the Internet became common.
