Due to the government's pressure to cut prices, not only major ramen companies but also the confectionery and baking industries are participating in the price reduction. Some cuts in ramen, snacks, and bread prices are expected to help stabilize processed food prices, which have risen since last year.
SPC announced that it will lower the price of about 30 bread by an average of 5 percent from early July. The confectionery and baking industry has also started reducing representative product prices. Lotte Well Food also has decided to cut the price of three snacks by an average of 5.9 percent starting next month. It will be lowered by 100 won from 1700 won to 1,600 won at convenience stores.
However, consumer groups point out that companies have not lowered enough as they have raised product prices. While consumers welcome food companies' price reduction policies, some point out that they only show off by raising product prices by a large margin and lowering them slightly when they lower them. It is also criticized that limiting the product to certain items is insufficient.
