As the end of the year is coming up, many events are being held to finish up the semester. College Majors’ Night is one of those events. This event is hosted by the college and departments’ student councils, which offer various activities and programs that attract students from the University of Seoul (UOS).

Students from each college or department participate in the events. Activities and programs are designed to promote friendship among students. Most of the events offer dinner and performances organized by students. Furthermore, prizes and gifts are distributed through lottery and quiz.

Programs that showcase the academic accomplishments of students are organized to emphasize the unique characteristics of each college and department. Therefore, The UOS Times covers three remarkable events in this article.

College of Public Affairs and Economics’ Night

At the College of Public Affairs and Economics’ Night, students enjoyed a wide range of programs and activities corresponding to both retro and newtro (a compound word of “new” and “retro”) concepts. In particular, Jeongdeun-Singer and Challenge! Jeong Kyung-Daeng offered opportunities for students to showcase their talents.

In the Jeongdeun-Singer program, participants sang in each round and the best singer was selected through voting. In the Challenge! Jeong Kyung-Daeng program, several students worked together as a team to solve the problems that included initial consonant games and quizzes, questioning major knowledge.

Participants enjoyed activities while dressed up according to concepts. Park Seok-hyun (Dept. of Public Administration, ’22), who participated in the event, said “Thanks to the students who appeared on Jeongdeun-Singer, I had fun listening to their songs. In addition, I was disappointed that I couldn’t accurately respond to questions because the quiz required quick wits.”

English Majors’ Night

Students who are majoring in English gathered to form friendships through various activities and programs, including UCC contest, Quiz time, and small club introductions. Additionally, the Speech Contest, which is unique program in English major, took place. The Speech Contest is a program in which participants choose one of three topics and make a presentation. In this program, students showcased their English writing and speaking skills.

Furthermore, not only students but also professors participated in the quiz time, solving quizzes related to English literature and language. Bae Eun-chae (Dept. of English Language and Literature, ’23), who participated in the event said that “The time we spent laughing and talking together outside of the classroom was enjoyable and brought us closer to embracing English.”

Environmental Horticulture Majors’ Night

The Environmental Horticulture Majors’ Night is similar to the two previously introduced events. In addition to the Majors’ Night event, the Environmental Horticulture Exhibition was held. In this exhibition, undergraduate and graduate students displayed many horticultural works using various flowers, including chrysanthemums planted and grown by the students themselves.

Students from the Department of Environmental Horticulture showed their horticultural techniques and works they learned in class. Choi Joo-young (Dept. of Environmental Horticulture, ’21) said that “We utilized the techniques learned both in the class and club to craft chrysanthemum works that students planted and cultivated themselves.” Furthermore, visitors who came to watch this beautiful exhibition had a great experience taking a break from their daily life.

College Majors’ Night has been held in other colleges and departments besides the three events introduced above. These various events enrich our university and allow students to build friendships, contributing to the creation of a harmonious community.
