A new dormitory is being built for students. The new building will be located between the Main Library and the existing dormitory and will be connected with the current one by a bridge. There are already two dormitory buildings (the Student Dormitory and the International House) on campus. However, to provide students with better housing, the dormitory facilities will be extended. The extension work started in May 2017 and is scheduled to end in November 2018. Originally, the due date was September 2018, but this was postponed because of unexpected difficulties. The overall design of the building will be similar to the existing dormitory buildings, so that it will not stand out too much.
The new building will have seven floors, including one underground. The total floor area is estimated to be 4,942.15m2. About 300 students will be able to live in the new dormitory. The estimated budget for the building is about 15.9 billion KRW in total. The plan is to open the dormitory for students from March 2019, when the new spring semester starts.
Since the new building is located near the current dormitory and the Main Library, the noise and the dust caused by the construction might distract students. To counter such problems, 5-meter-high soundproof walls with nets are being installed around the construction site to prevent dust from circulating. The pathway behind the Main Library has been closed and a detour to the existing dormitory has been made due to safety issues. “Although the environment cannot be free from noise and dust, we are trying our best to minimize the problems,” Oh Jong-keun, an official of the Division of Construction, said.
