On Sep. 26, UOS signed a MOU with Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), Dongdaemun-gu office, and universities in Dongdaemun-gu; Kyunghee University, Hankuk university of Foreign Studies, and Korea University. This MOU is for city region of Dongdaemun-gu’s development and creating university town.

According to the LH’s President Park Sang-woo’s interview on Asiatoday, this is a new experiment for the fact that universities, local government, public enterprise cooperate to solve regional problem.

He added that LH will keep trying to use this kind of mechanism to realize the New Deal Policy for the City, such as housing problem, employment issue of the youth, and supporting to the urban regeneration and social economic organizations. With this meaningful project, Dongdaemun-gu hope to establish a master plan for strengthening regional competitiveness, gain a foothold for specialized development as a university city, and solve regional issues.

Especially, UOS and three other universities will participate on the joint council with LH and Dongdaemun-gu government, while the last two parties perform a research project for specialization of Dongdaemun region. The project will cover the residents and local governments to revive the surrounding area for providing an environment where young people can work and settle in the region even after they graduated from the university. In the future, each institute will plan to develop strategic bases for the town management of four Dongdaemun life zones, to promote rehabilitation projects, and to create a university city.
