Digital urban Simulation Center Opened

In January, the University of Seoul opened the Digital Urban Simulation Center. The center was established with the help of a fund provided by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development for the urban science study in 2004.

The center will provide a digital simulation of city space and can be used for planning cities, transportation systems, design and cultural heritage restoration projects.

Nam Joong-Soo, Alexander Vershbow Come

The DCF (Discovery Course for Your Future) schedule for this semester has been decided.

As one of the programs that the UOS Jobs & Career Development Center are planning, the DCF is that calling to a lecture such people as a famous CEO, a recruiter of enterprises and a high-ranking officer. Listening to the speakers’ presentations given by their people, students learn to an enterprising spirit and vision for successful public life.

The latest speaker, Park Young-Bae (Director of LG Chemistry) was invited on March, 13. He presented about ¡®Understanding and entry tragedy of an enterprise’ and explained job seeking know-how to students.

The lectures are reserved three times in a term. Next DCF lecture is Nam Joong-Soo (KT CEO). It is scheduled at May 3. And at the beginning of the June there will be a visit by Alexander Vershbow (the U.S. Ambassador to Korea) as a speaker in the program. There is no limit to participation.

UOS Students to Study at New Building.

On December 15, 2005, the University of Seoul (UOS) held a ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the Information Technology Building. The building, with six stories above ground and one below, will be used by the students of School of electrical and computer engineering and Computer Science.

The construction is scheduled to take two years to complete. On March 9, 2006, a groundbreaking ceremony for a lecture building complex, a Law building and an indoor tennis court was held. The building is going to have six floors and one underground, which will be occupied by the faculty of Liberal Arts and Teacher Education, the Law Professional Graduate School, and the department of Sports Informatics. The construction is scheduled for completion in June, 2008.

UOS Selected Public Relations Helpers

The first public relations helpers have been selected. Selecting criteria put point to students’ love of the UOS and there was equality between juniors and sophomores. The selection process for this course consisted of a written exam, a resume and letter of application and an oral test. After passing these criteria, finally 13 students were selected.

The selected will get scholarships and a uniform. The helpers will work on and off campus as the face of the UOS. Their primary missions are to suggest publicity ideas at the regular meetings and make a PR brochure.

Program for Global Urban Experts in Seoul 2006 Held

The University of Seoul (UOS) is going to hold the training program for global urban experts. The program will run from April 3, 2006 until April 16. The UOS invited 30 foreigners from 15 cities in 14 countries, who are in the field of urban public service; transport, environment, construction, and city planning.

They will learn by inspecting various places in Seoul and taking courses about urban policy and science at the UOS. Perhaps, the program will be a good chance to inform Seoul and the UOS.

Global Leadership Program

The University of Seoul (UOS) gave detailed information about Global Leadership Program (GLP). The GLP aims to improve ability in global leadership and display the unique character of the college of Urban Science.

This year the best feature of the GLP is a repeal of Free Travel and an intensification of Theme Travel. All students, as well as professors and graduate students, are entitled to participate. The main idea of study should be related to Urban Science and a team should consist of 4 to 6 people.

A team can choose investment places if there are central or local governments, research institutes, universities or enterprises etc. of global standard level. However the subsidy would be different depending on the chosen location. Another feature of the GLP is strengthening the command of language.

After passing the first examination of their career papers, they undergo an English oral test. So people, who have lower English grade and don’t have suitable certification of authorized English tests, can not apply. the final result comes out on april 14. Foreign Language Training Program

Institute of International Cooperation and Education Center sponsors a foreign language training program at eight universities in the United States, Canada, England, Japan and China this summer. Programs last for six weeks except for Tokyo Gakugei University’s, which lasts for four weeks.

Students should apply from April 5 to 7. Twenty students will be chosen for each school based on grade point average, statement of purpose and, for English-language universities, TOEIC or other standardized English tests.

Although the university is going to arrange everything from round-trip flight tickets to housing, it supports only the tuition fee and half of the accommodation costs. Students are responsible for other costs, i.e. flight tickets and other incidental costs including meals. Total costs vary from 1.4 million won at Beijing Union University to 3.3 million won at SUNY in Stony Brook.

University Plans to Change Admission Criteria for 2007

The university announced a change to the admission policy for students entering the university in 2007. According to Kim Byeonggi, a staff at the Administration office, the school is going to ask students applying for Humanities and Social Sciences majors to take a Korean writing test, as it’s difficult to select talented students based only on high school grade and Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test score.

For those applying for Science majors, the school will ask to be provided with results of Korean test, which is a part of KSAT. Also, the university is going to introduce a special admission program for students talented in Chinese Characters and for students who had on unusual education. In the past, the university only provided such programs for students talented in foreign language, math, science and sports.

Group Career Counseling

The Student Counseling Center offers a group counseling program this semester to help students make more informed career decisions. Starting on April 4, the program takes place every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and runs through May 30.

No qualifications are required for registration but those who sign up are required to attend all eight sessions for full benefit. Participants will take a personality test and an aptitude test, find out about various career options and plan out a long-term career goal with a counselor.

“UOS Buddy,” Helper for Foreign Exchange Students

Here to help foreign exchange students adapt to the Korean environment, please welcome the "UOS Buddy.” A "UOS Buddy" can experience various culture and improve international manners. Twenty-six applicants were elected on March 2. The qualification process for "UOS Buddy" is quite strict. They`ll do lots of international activities hereafter.

UOS Voted One of the Top Architectural Education

The University of Seoul(UOS) has been voted one of the top authentic universities of Architectural Accrediting. It was given the lead by KAAB(Korea Architectural Accrediting Board) and aims to meet the global standards and inter-recognition of architecture demanded on the advice of the UIA(Union Internationale des Architectes).

Moreover, because there is a need to follow the free-market principal in the architectural design field, the KAAB introduces it to Korea. The selected university should submit self-appreciate reports to KAAD by June. After that, KAAD fieldwork will be undertaken in September, and this November qualification will be given if they pass all courses.

A relation of the UOS said, “The certification is a prior condition for increasing the competitive power of the UOS. It would be a critical test that architectural education in Korea may be recognized worldwide.” If the UOS take the authentication, the reputation of the university would be raised.

Seven Students pass the State Examination of Law

On December 22 last, seven students passed 47th the state examination of law. They are Gwon O-Seong(Law 94), Yang Seong-hyun(Law 94), Lee Young-Guk(Administration 91), Lee Hyun-Gyu(Law 97), Jang Young-Chae(Law 99), Jin Seung-Han(Law 97) and Han Jae-Duk(Law 94).

Meanwhile 47th primary successful candidates of examination took scholarship in the administrative building conference room. Woori Bank Donated 10 Billion Won to the University The university attracted 10 billion won for school development fund from Woori Bank. The fund is part of donation Woori Bank promised to Seoul City.

Last November, Lee Chang-beom, the president of University, and Hwang Young-gi, the president of Woori Bank signed an agreement. Donation made by Woori Bank is the largest amount of money the university ever attracted in its history.

It will be delivered to university over three years: 5 billion won in 2006, 25 billion won in 2007 and in 2008 “The fund will be deposited in the bank and we will use its interests for scholarship and research” Jo Man-ho, a staff at Office of Planning and Development, said.

New Security System The university introduced an unmanned security system of CAPS, a well-known security service provider on March 15. Buildings on campus are automatically locked from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays and for 24 hours on Sundays.

Anyone who wants to enter a building during "locked’ hours is required to identify their face to the visual entrance control system. Student Hall, University Center and Engineering Building are still going to be open 24/7 for the public who want to use the restrooms.
