There was an international symposium held at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on April 30.
The participants were nearly 30 people from six countries, including presidents of fourteen universities and other distinguished guests. They talked about globalization and the roles of universities. All of those who participated in this symposium agreed to train citizens of the world who can fully understand across cultures and think ingeniously, not just general exchange students. The UOS made an arrangement with six foreign universities to exchange students and promote academic cooperation.

Law School Admission Process Announced

The UOS announced the process of admission to the 2009 School of Law on April 29. The UOS will run the law school which will give special education in tax law. General admission has two stages. In the first stage the law school selects six times the number of regular successful candidates. During this stage, students are evaluated by LEET (60%), records in college (20%) and an official English score (20%) such as TOEIC, TOEFL or TEPS.
In the next stage, the final successful candidates are selected after being examined on their first stage scores (50%), paper-screening and oral tests (20%), in-depth interviewing (20%) and essay writing (10%). Also, 10% of the regular numbers are filled with people from low income backgrounds.
Facts about fundamental humanity such as one’s own value, service to the public and social activities are elements under consideration when applicants are examined in the paper-screening process and oral tests, except for those under special admission.

Prof. Park Chul-hwi Takes Office as the Chairman of KSEE

Park Chul-hwi, Prof. of the School of Environmental Engineering, took office as a Chairman of the Korean Society of Environmental Engineers (KSEE). The KSEE is the biggest academy to look into and propose environmental preservation measures, each engineer cultivates mutual friendship.
This organization, established in 1978, organizes various environmental events and holds activities about environment preservation. Prof. Park has been Chairman of the Scholarship Committee. He won the 16th chairman election on November 2, 2007 and took office as chairman on May 1, 2008.

New Graduation Requirements

The UOS has implemented new English graduation requirements. From February 2012, students who want to graduate must satisfy certain required English test scores such as in TOEIC, TOEFL or TEPS. The due date for graduate qualification is two months before graduation day and students must submit a report card. However, student who is going to graduate before 2012, can choose either graduation thesis or graduate qualification. Also, students whose required English scores are sub-par can take two alternative English classes and must get over a B grade.

Student President of College By-election

On April 11, the result of students’ decision had come out. Student President and Vice-President of the College of Urban Science and the College of Humanities were elected, as a while the Student President of the College of Engineering was elected. This vote took place in the Engineering Building, Science & Technology Building, Liberal Arts Building and other buildings from April 1 to 3, and was held by students from each college. All voter turned out rates were over 50%.

Criticism of the New Right Korean Modern History Textbook

Hankook Ilbo enforced an academic evaluation on Korean modern history alternative textbook written by the New Rightist. This textbook was published last April as a hot issue. Hankook Ilbo requested three historians including Prof. Jeong Jae-jeong (Dept. of Korean History) to evaluate this textbook. They had a little different point of view, but they shared the main idea. Prof. Jeong said, “This book might to be regarded as right wing nationalism by the left wing nationalist. I think this is a chance for us to discuss how to build our Korean modern history.”
